The museum sits across the street from Kelly Ingram Park and the 16th Street Baptist Church, making it the anchor of a full Civil Rights District experience.

The Birmingham Museum of Art is one of the largest art museums in the Southeast, and admission is always free. With a collection spanning more than 27,000 works across cultures and centuries, there is something here for every age and interest.
Families with younger children will appreciate the museum's approachable layout and family-friendly programming. The outdoor sculpture garden is a favorite for a relaxed afternoon. Plan to spend at least two hours and come back, because one visit is never enough.

The museum below tells the story of the city's industrial roots. After exploring the exhibits, take the elevator to the observation deck for a panoramic view of the city that will give your family a whole new appreciation for Birmingham.
Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum

If your family has anyone who loves cars, motorcycles, or anything with an engine, the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum is a must. Home to the largest motorcycle collection in the world, the museum is as visually stunning as it is impressive in scope.
The adjacent Barber Motorsports Park adds an extra layer of excitement, particularly when events are scheduled. This one routinely surprises first-time visitors who have no idea something this extraordinary exists in Birmingham.
McWane Science Center

McWane Science Center is the go-to destination for hands-on family fun in Birmingham, and for good reason. With interactive exhibits spanning physics, biology, earth science, and more, McWane makes learning feel like play. The IMAX Dome Theatre adds a cinematic experience that is hard to replicate anywhere else in the region.
McWane is particularly well suited for younger children, though older kids and adults will find plenty to engage with as well.
Southern Museum of Flight

The Southern Museum of Flight is one of Birmingham's most underrated gems. The museum displays more than 100 aircraft, including military jets, vintage propeller planes, and rare experimental aircraft. The collection traces the history of aviation from its earliest days to the present.

Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark

Sloss Furnaces is unlike any other museum experience in Birmingham. A National Historic Landmark and the only 20th-century blast furnace in the United States preserved as a museum, Sloss offers families a raw, industrial look at the city's iron and steel heritage.
The massive furnaces, pipes, and machinery create a fascinating landscape. Sloss also hosts concerts, events, and programming throughout the year.
