In just a few short weeks, school will be out. And if you haven’t started making your summer activity list, consider this your sign. Whether you’re planning a family outing, a girls’ night, or a date night with a little friendly competition, I know just the place.
Great Big Game Show, located at The Summit in Birmingham, is exactly what it sounds like. From the moment you walk in, you feel it. The big wheel, the lights, the energy, the larger-than-life setup. I felt like I had stepped onto the set of a real television game show.
Great Big Game Show
Our host, Donnell, set the tone right from the start. He brought an infectious energy that immediately pulled us in and kept the momentum going from one game to the next. A great host can make or break an experience like this, and Donnell was absolutely the real deal. Within minutes, we were fully invested. We were laughing, strategizing, and yes, getting a little competitive.
Our one-hour time slot flew by as we worked our way through about five mini games, each one bringing its own flavor of fun and chaos. Some were very similar to popular ones you’ve seen on television, and some were unique to Great Big Game Show, but just as fun. The thrill of racing against a buzzer, the pressure of trying to beat the other team to an answer, and watching your score climb after you’ve been trailing the whole game all made for such a fun experience. Oh, and that last-minute comeback energy? There’s nothing quite like it.

The games are creative and surprisingly physical. In Build It Up, teams race to stack giant blocks as high as possible in just one minute — then step back and measure. In Spin Out, a massive wheel determines your points, but every space you land on becomes a Lose It All zone for everyone else, so the strategy gets real very quickly. Drawing in the Dark is exactly what it sounds like: blindfolded, 45 seconds, and a doodle that your team has to decode. And if you want pure, joyful chaos, Blaster Blitz puts foam blasters in your hands and targets on the screen. And these aren’t even all the options available. Games for each session are chosen at random to keep things interesting.
If you’re bringing kids, don’t hesitate. The Great Big Game Show is recommended for ages six and up, but the staff is happy to adjust the difficulty so that even younger guests can fully participate. Mixed-age groups are warmly welcomed, and the games are designed so that any age can contribute. Little ones especially love the giant block tower, the oversized spinning wheel, and showing off their artistic skills in Drawing in the Dark.
And if game shows aren’t quite your speed, The Escape Game is located in the same building — so escape room enthusiasts are well taken care of, too. I’ll be checking out an escape room on my next visit.
However you spend your summer, make sure at least one evening includes a little friendly competition, a lot of laughter, and a host who brings the energy. Trust me, you’ll want to go back.
