I love a good day trip. And thankfully, Birmingham is situated within close proximity of so many great options. Spring is in the air, and it’s the perfect time to change the scenery a bit without committing to a full weekend away. If this sounds good to you, come with me to Villa Rica, Georgia. Located just under two hours from Birmingham, Villa Rica is an easy drive east along I-20.
But first, let’s stop at Buc-ee’s, fuel up on snacks, coffee, and all the road trip essentials before continuing on toward this unsuspecting West Georgia town.
Spring in Villa Rica: Where to Go and What to See
I recently escaped to Villa Rica for the day, and I had a great experience. Consider this your invitation to borrow my itinerary and create a perfect day of your own.
Start at the Welcome Center
Begin your visit at the Villa Rica Welcome Center. It’s a great place to get your bearings, pick up maps, and learn what’s happening around town. The staff is happy to offer suggestions based on your interests. You’ll find information about local history, shopping, dining, outdoor fun, and more.

Step Into History
Pine Mountain Gold Museum, where families can explore Villa Rica’s role in Georgia’s first gold rush. Kids can pan for gold, tour an authentic mine, ride the Scenic Train Ride, and learn history in a hands-on way that feels more like adventure than a lesson.
Other historic sites in Villa Rica:
Wick’s Tavern Historic Site – Built in the 1830s, this former stagecoach stop and miners’ tavern offers a glimpse into Villa Rica’s Gold Rush roots. Today, it serves as a living-history site where visitors can step back into the town’s earliest days.
North Villa Rica Commercial Historic District – This small stretch of downtown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features early 20th-century storefronts that reflect the town’s railroad-era growth.
Clinton Nature Preserve – Just a short drive away, this 200-acre park features a lake, nature trails, and picnic areas that are great for a fun day with the family.
Downtown Lunch & Strolling
I’m obsessed with charming downtowns, and downtown Villa Rica didn’t disappoint. Make your way to this historic area for lunch and a leisurely stroll. Browse shops like like Main Street Mercantile for gifts and home décor, and pop into antique stores for a little treasure hunting. Downtown Villa Rica is lined with beautifully restored buildings that are perfect for wandering, window shopping, and soaking in the small-town warmth and slow-travel vibes I love.
Downtown Villa Rica Lunch Picks
Chat & Choo – A local favorite for breakfast and lunch with hearty sandwiches, soups, salads, and comfort classics in a laid-back setting right on West Montgomery Street.
Gabe's Downtown – A beloved Louisiana-style bistro in the heart of downtown serving flavorful Cajun-inspired fare — perfect for a sit-down midday meal.
The Olive Tree Restaurant - Villa Rica – A cozy Greek and Italian spot with classics like gyros, pasta, and Mediterranean sides — great for a relaxed lunch with bold flavors.
