The Bryant-Jordan Student-Athlete Program has honored Altamont School senior Aubrey Sanders of Hoover as the AHSAA Area 3A winner in its annual scholarship competition! The program’s mission is to recognize students who, by ability and effort, have achieved excellence in both academics and athletics, and who motivate and encourage all segments of the student population to strive to be the best they can be. In addition to his demonstrated achievement in a school where all classes are taught at the honors level, Aubrey is in his second year as captain of Altamont’s varsity baseball team. He was honored as defensive player and teammate of the year, and has committed to play baseball for Johns Hopkins University starting next fall. Aubrey is a respected leader on campus, currently serving as SGA president after several years in other executive offices, including class president. Off campus, he has worked with the YMCA Summer Lunch Program, UAB Youth Advisory Board, and Ignite Hoover, for which he collected more than 1,000 books for donation to children in need.
Nominating teachers praised Aubrey’s ability to ask thoughtful questions and make insightful connections. Pattie Bank is among them, having taught Aubrey in the seventh grade and served as his advisor for six years. “Even at that young age, I could see his dedication to learning,” Bank said. “Inquisitive and curious, he was always willing to go the extra mile for a deeper understanding of the topic. In my 26 years of teaching, I cannot recall a student leader more respected and loved than Aubrey. From our youngest fifth graders to his peers in the twelfth grade, Aubrey is known for his integrity, his commitment to excellence, and, most importantly, his kindness.”
