For many, the idea of camping sounds nice—until it’s time to pack the gear, pitch the tent, and hope for a decent night’s sleep. That’s where Timberline Glamping Company comes in, offering a way to enjoy the outdoors without sacrificing comfort, and one family is bringing that experience to Oak Mountain State Park.
Sarah and Jeff Johnson, the franchise owners behind Timberline’s Oak Mountain location, didn’t just stumble into the glamping business; they were drawn to it. “We loved that it combined our appreciation for the outdoors with the chance to create something meaningful for families,” says Sarah. After purchasing their first franchise in Georgia in 2022, the couple quickly saw just how much demand there was for a more approachable way to experience nature. “People want to unplug, but they don’t necessarily want to give up comfort to do it.” The balance between adventure and amenities is exactly what makes glamping so appealing.

For Sarah and Jeff, the venture is a family affair. With three teenagers at home, life is already full, but Timberline has become something they can build together. “It’s taught all of us a lot about hard work, hospitality, and serving others,” Sarah says. “Our kids have really been able to be part of it.” Their combined professional backgrounds have also shaped the experience they offer. Jeff’s 21 years in the Navy bring structure, leadership, and attention to detail to daily operations. Sarah’s 18-year career in real estate adds a layer of thoughtful design and customer-focused hospitality. The result is a stay that feels intentional from start to finish.

For families who have never tried glamping, the concept is simple: all the best parts of camping, none of the stress. “You still get the campfires, fresh air, and time outside,” Sarah says. “But you don’t have to worry about setting up anything.” At Timberline’s Oak Mountain site, everything is ready upon arrival. Tents are fully furnished with real beds, cozy linens, and thoughtful touches that elevate a traditional camping experience. Guests can wake up and brew coffee in their tent, relax under soft string lights, and settle in for a peaceful night’s sleep, something Sarah says guests rave about. “We consistently hear that people had the best sleep ever.”

Choosing Oak Mountain was an easy decision. As Alabama’s largest state park, it offers a wide range of activities for families—hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking, and more—all in one place. “It’s a destination where you can really make a full experience out of your stay,” Sarah says. “You don’t have to leave the park.” That’s where glamping fits in perfectly. Instead of treating a day at the park as a quick outing, families can turn it into a full weekend, without the hassle of traditional camping logistics. “We provide a comfortable home base,” she explains. “After a full day of activities, you can come back, relax, and just enjoy being together.”
One of the biggest surprises for the couple has been the wide range of guests who are drawn to the experience. “We see everyone from families with young kids to grandparents,” Sarah says. “Couples, girls’ trips—really anyone who wants to enjoy the outdoors in a way that feels approachable.” By removing barriers like schlepping gear, setup, and experience level, glamping opens the door for more people to enjoy nature, especially those who might otherwise feel intimidated by traditional camping.
Jeff and Sarah aren’t stopping at Oak Mountain. They’re planning to expand in Alabama, with a new site in the works at Lake Lurleen State Park. Their goal is to make glamping a go-to option for families across the state. “We want to grow thoughtfully, while maintaining the quality and attention to detail that people expect,” says Sarah. Ultimately, they hope families leave feeling more connected. Whether it’s roasting marshmallows, sharing stories under the stars, or simply stepping away from screens for a while, the experience is designed to create space for connection. “Life gets busy, and it’s easy to miss those moments.”
