Sprinkles of Hope was founded by Naomi Druxman and sisters Kelsey and Marigny Bellot after a class field trip. The three were talking about volunteering at Children’s Hospital when Naomi shared about her experience volunteering in the pediatric emergency department and especially the book vending machine there. Children who receive a token can choose a book of their own, something Naomi says can make an otherwise challenging hospital visit a little brighter. “You can see how excited they get,” she says. “It can really make a stressful experience a little better.”
The friends also shared a love of baking, and an idea began to take shape. What if they could combine something they enjoyed with something that could help children? After the field trip, they “sprung into action,” planning a bake sale, reaching out to others, and getting their friends involved. Their goal was simple: raise money to purchase books for the Children’s vending machine.
For Naomi, the effort stems from what she saw while volunteering in the emergency department. She remembers seeing families who were overwhelmed by the experience of being at the hospital. A token and the opportunity to choose a book offers a welcome moment of excitement. Even sitting down to read with a child can make a difference, Naomi says, and being able to give a child a book to take home can be even more special when books are an expense families may not always be able to afford.
Friends, teachers, and family members came out in full force to support Sprinkles of Hope’s first bake sale. For the three founders, that support—and ultimately delivering boxes of books to the hospital—made the work feel especially rewarding. “When we donated the books to Children’s, seeing all of the boxes made me think, “Wow, every one of these books is going to make a kid really happy,” ” Naomi says.
That thought continues to inspire Naomi, Kelsey, and Marigny as they carry on baking and volunteering so that Sprinkles of Hope can make a difference for children.
